Painful or Irregular Periods? A TCM View of Menstrual Health

← All Articles Get Consultation →

Cramps that fold you in half. A cycle that won't keep a calendar. PMS that hijacks a week of your life. In TCM, your period isn't an inconvenience to medicate away — it's a monthly report card on the state of your Blood and Qi. Read it, and the patterns behind the pain become fixable.

Your Period Is a Monthly Report Card

TCM sees the cycle as governed by Blood and Qi flowing smoothly. Pain, clots, timing, and mood all encode which pattern is dominant. Unlike a one-size approach, TCM asks what your cycle is saying — then supports the specific imbalance.

The 3 Menstrual Patterns

1. Blood Stasis (血瘀)

Dark clots, sharp fixed pelvic pain, a flow that comes in gushes. "Stasis" means Blood isn't moving freely — and pain is the signal.

2. Qi-Blood Deficiency

Pale, light flow; fatigue; dizziness; a sense of emptiness. There isn't enough Blood and Qi to menstruate smoothly, so the cycle is faint and draining.

3. Liver Qi Stagnation

Mood swings, breast tenderness, irritability, and bloating before the period. The Liver's flow is stuck, and the pre-period is where it shows.

3 TCM Practices for Easier Cycles

Step 1 — Rose + Ginger Tea Pre-Period

A week before, brew rose buds (move Liver Qi) with a slice of ginger (warm and move). This eases the mood swings and tenderness that come from stagnation — gently, daily.

Step 2 — Keep the Lower Body Warm

Cold constricts flow. Avoid iced drinks and expose the abdomen and feet to warmth, especially during the period. A warm foot soak draws energy down and relaxes cramping.

Step 3 — Press Sanyinjiao (SP6)

SP6 — four finger-widths above the inner ankle — is the crossroads of the three Yin channels and a go-to point for menstrual ease. Press both sides for a minute or two when cramps start; add Tai Chong (LR3) for pre-period tension.

A painful period isn't "just how it is." In TCM it's a pattern with a name — and named patterns can be shifted, month by month.
