What's Your TCM Body Type? The 9 Constitutions, Explained

← All Articles Get Consultation →

Two people eat the same "healthy" salad. One feels energized; the other feels bloated and sluggish. Same food, opposite results. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) explains this with a simple, practical idea: we are not all the same body type. What heals one person can quietly harm another. The tool TCM uses to sort this out is constitution assessment (体质辨识) — and it's one of the most useful concepts you can learn about your own body.

Why "One Diet Fits All" Fails

Western nutrition often speaks in universal rules: more greens, less sugar, drink water. TCM agrees on the basics but adds a crucial layer: your constitution determines how you respond. A cold-natured person thrives on warming ginger; a heat-type person gets a headache from it. Knowing your type turns generic advice into personal guidance.

The 9 Constitutions

Most people are a blend of 2–3 types, with one dominant. Here's the map:

1. Balanced (平和质)

The ideal. Good sleep, steady energy, smooth digestion, even temperament. Goal: maintain.

2. Qi-Deficient (气虚质)

Easily fatigued, soft voice, sweats with little effort, catches colds often. Needs: Huangqi, regular meals, gentle movement.

3. Yang-Deficient (阳虚质)

Cold hands and feet, prefers warm food/drink, slow metabolism, low drive. Needs: ginger, cinnamon, warming foods; avoid raw/cold.

4. Yin-Deficient (阴虚质)

Feels warm, dry mouth, night sweats, restless. Needs: goji, lily bulb, cooling moistening foods; avoid spicy/heat.

5. Phlegm-Damp (痰湿质)

Extra weight, heavy limbs, sluggish digestion, oily skin. Needs: coix seed, less sugar/dairy; movement to move dampness.

6. Damp-Heat (湿热质)

Acne, bitter taste, heavy limbs, irritability, strong odor. Needs: chrysanthemum, cooling greens; less fried/alcohol.

7. Blood-Stagnant (血瘀质)

Dark lips, easy bruising, dull chronic pain, varicose tendencies. Needs: movement, foods that invigorate; circulation support.

8. Qi-Stagnant (气郁质)

Mood swings, frequent sighing, chest tightness, anxiety, PMS. Needs: rose tea, movement, stress release (see our anxiety article).

9. Special / Allergic (特禀质)

Allergies, asthma, sensitive skin, reactivity. Needs: gentle, individualized care; identify and avoid triggers.

How to Start Spotting Yours

  1. Track temperature preference. Do you crave warmth or cool? That single clue separates Yang-deficient from Yin-deficient.
  2. Notice digestion after meals. Bloating, heaviness, or energy crashes point to dampness or deficiency.
  3. Watch your mood and chest. Sighing and tightness = Qi stagnation.
  4. Look at your tongue. In TCM, the tongue is a window to internal balance (coating, color, shape all matter).
Constitution isn't a diagnosis or a life sentence. It's a starting map. The same body that's damp today can shift with the right foods, teas, and habits over weeks.

Why This Matters for Real Results

This is the heart of a TCM consultation: before recommending anything, a practitioner reads your constitution. That's why a friend's "magic tea" might do nothing for you — or why the same herb helps one person and aggravates another. Personalization isn't a luxury in TCM; it's the method.
