Hot Flashes and Mood Swings? A TCM View of Menopause and 3 Ways to Ease the Transition

One moment you're fine; the next, heat rolls up your chest and face like a wave, your sleep fragments, and small things feel disproportionately sharp. If this sounds like your reality, you're in good company — and you're not "hormonal" in the dismissive sense. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), menopause is a natural transition, and the discomfort is a readable pattern: Kidney Yin decline with empty heat.

Why TCM Doesn't Call Menopause a "Deficiency to Fix"

Western medicine often frames menopause as an estrogen deficit to replace. TCM sees it differently: the Kidneys store your deepest reserve (Jing), and as it naturally declines with age, the cooling, moistening Yin can no longer balance the body's warmth. The result is "empty heat" — flashes, night sweats, dryness — riding on top of a depleted base.

The goal isn't to force youth back. It's to nourish what's thinning and clear what's overheating, so the transition is livable.

The Patterns Behind the Symptoms

3 Steps to Ease the Transition

Step 1 — Nourish Yin with Lily Bulb and Goji

Lily bulb (Baihe) and goji (Gouqi) are the gentle classics for cooling empty heat and moistening dryness — exactly the pattern behind flashes and night sweats. Brew them as a tea or add to congee. Avoid heating spices (chili, excess ginger) and alcohol, which fan the heat.

Step 2 — Build a Cooling Evening Routine

Empty heat flares most at night. A cooling wind-down helps: a lukewarm (not hot) foot soak, dim lights by 9:30, and Suanzaoren tea if sleep is fragmented. Keep the bedroom cool — the body settles when it can actually release heat.

Step 3 — Press Sanyinjiao

Sanyinjiao (SP6) — four finger-widths above the inner ankle — is the crossing point of the three Yin channels and a cornerstone for women's health in TCM. Press or gently massage both sides for a few minutes each evening to support the Yin and calm the Spirit.

Menopause isn't a breakdown. It's a redirection of your deepest energy — and with the right support, it can be steadier than the years that preceded it.
